Programmable Thermostat
|
| |
The programmable thermostat on my upstairs Comfortmaker heat pump has started acting strangely. It's made by Totaline. In normal operation, when it is being programmed, certain numbers or digits (temperature, heat, cool) will flash to indicate which parameter is being set. After a few seconds, the flashing stops to indicate that the control is no... más »

Using dryer with rigid duct and 3" outdoor vent
|
| |
The previous owner of my house had put in a 3" dryer outdoor vent. Why I don't know, perhaps this was the size years ago, but in any event I thought I would compensate for this by running all rigid duct from my dryer to the vent. I ran about 8 feet of 4" duct with 2 elbows: one at the dryer outlet in the back, and one at a 45 where the duct meets... más »

Grouting new tile question
|
| |
Finished putting up 4"x4" ceramic tile around the bathtub and other places. This is the first time I've done tile. Does the small gap between the top of the tub and the bottom of the tile get grouted, or, do you use the "tub & tile" caulk? If the answer is "tub & tile" caulk then, obviously, I need to caulk first before I start smearing... más »

What stops the water?
|
| |
In a typical bathroom floor tile installation you have the following sequence: Plywood subfloor, Thin-Set, Backerboard, Thin-Set, Tile/Grout. If the grout is not perfectly sealed and the bathroom is heavily used (with a lot of water on the floor), where does the water stop? I know Backerboard is water-damage-resistant, but I hear it can wick and... más »

vacuum cleaner puzzler.
|
| |
Hi all, got a real puzzler. Bought and old canister type vacuum off eBay and it arrived today. Hooked it up, started testing it out, seemed to work fine. Vacuumed the kitchen and dining room (tile floor) then got to an area rug in front of the sink. Switched to the power head and it worked OK for a minute or so and then tripped its built in circuit breaker. I... más »

Oil furnace
|
| |
I have an oil hot water furnace that when its on, runs weather or not heat is needed just to maintain the temp. I want to change it to a cold start system so I can leave it on but not run unless my wood hot water furnace goes cold if I happen to overstay a visit or take a 2 day trip. Right now I have the burner switch off but the house could freeze up if... más »

Weil McLain v. Peerless Steam Boiler
|
| |
------------------------------ ------- Need to replace my steam boiler. I have narrowed my quotes to two; one for a Weil Mclain for $9000 and the other for a Peerless for $7000. Is the WM really worth the extra $2000? ...Delivered via [link] Building Construction and Maintenance Forum... más »

Door swelled from moisture won't close
|
| |
I have an exterior door which is wood (with a glass window in the middle). It was unstained wood when it was installed so I stained it with a stain/waterproofing product. I think, unfortunately, I forgot to stain the bottom of the door. Over the last couple weeks it has gotten harder and harder to open.... más »
