Welcome back, Captain General sir!
So why are these posts of yours dated 6-4-09 just showing up now on 6-13-09? Same old time-warp problems? Orbiting too close to a black hole in Darla's ship? Or jare you posting from a location light-days away? Something to ponder. Regardless, glad to see you posting here again.

Nightbat Hoping that is really you. We have our doubts because we know you would not jump ship. I am still the Florida meteorologist. Welcome back and start posting. TreBert

I think Darla's ship is not completely in our space-time yet. I am only seeing nightbats' posts in those that are replying to him. No direct posts as of yet. Anyway, much has happened down here on earth whilst you are with our She-Queen contemplating universal truths... but we have survived. Now it is perhaps without some cosmic humor that many internet providers are going to be dropping the entire usenet just at the time you have returned. I have roughly one month to find some alternative or face the prospect of eternal silence. At any rate, good to hear from you once again, Sir! Perhaps all is not lost...

Dearest Greysky! We are just back from a trip to the GA. I don't believe I ever said exactly what we think the GA is. Oh well - let us leave that for a future day of wet precip.

Well, if you ask me, the answer must be: Of course! Even swimming around the Marshalls we get the signal. Such beautiful creatures abound here! Have you ever visited Oceania, Double-A?

Most Gracious Majesty Princess Darla:
What a great surprise after all this time to read your enlightening words to us once again! I have never had the opportunity to visit Oceania or any of those tropical paradises. Must be wonderful. I have no way of adequately expressing the feeling of joy amongst all of us at alt.astronomy, Captain, crew, and fellow Officers at your safe and log awaited return. Hope your other affairs don't call you away again too soon.
I was trying to respond to your other post about the Earth's internal gravity, but was having problems. Must me some sort of Galactic- Google interface protocol problem. I thought you once said you were an astrobiologist, but you are now sounding more like an astrogeologist. I shall ponder your advanced thoughts on the subject try to come to a better understanding. Certainly Newtonian approximations or averaging outs do not give the whole truth of the situation. But Brad's contention is the the Earth is hollow in the center. I hope you are not going to tell me that he is right!
Bert says he has been trying to contact you. I am sure he will be especially happy to hear from you.
Hope all your journeys have been pleasant ones. Don't be a stranger. Don't catch the swine flu!

Thank you so much, Double-A. You always make us feel so welcome! In some ways an astrogeologist is an astrobiologist, my friend. "Mother Earth" is so much more than a human global personification, you know.
The Earth is not a perfect solid, no. There are "hollows" throughout. Just as there are "reverse hollows" in space. There is a magnificent source of Earth's magnetic field in the center. You all must learn more about magnetism. It is an underrated field of study.

Since every electric motor that runs and every transformer that hums is governed by the laws of electro-magnetism, I hereby decree your last statement as fallacious.

Most Gracious Darla,
We have indeed learned how life exists in solid rock miles below the Earth's surface. It as though the whole planet is alive in some sense. How deep down living cells exist no one knows. But the totality of life amounts to a lot more than the the 6 or 7 billion hominids roaming around the surface. Buy the way, what actually did happen to the Neanderthals?
> The Earth is not a perfect solid, no. > There are "hollows" throughout. > Just as there are "reverse hollows" in space.
Now there is something to ponder!
> There is a magnificent source of Earth's magnetic field in the center. > You all must learn more about magnetism. > It is an underrated field of study.
> -- > Darla
Yes, while we know how to use magnetism to make many useful devices, we are really still ignorant of it's deep physics. What exactly is magnetic flux? Can migratory birds actually see the Earth's magnetic filed lines of force? Are we headed for a collapse or reversal of that magnetic field? Magnetism seems to be a secondary effect of the electrical force, though maybe they are coequal. Finding a magnetic monopole would help establish that. But the big question: Is gravity the tertiary effect of the electrical force? Or the secondary effect of electromagnetism?

While we know how to make motors run and transformers hum, our approach to such things is on a engineering level, using mathematical relationships passed down by Maxwell, Heaviside's vectors, and the prototypes constructed by men like Tesla and Edison. But that doesn't mean we yet have a really deep physics understanding of these things and couldn't still learn a lot about the essential nature of electricity and magnetism.

Not really, but a graviton ISP channel or waveguide would certainly be interestingly FTL, similar to your DRILL performing as a laser pipe or waveguide that allows a central or core laser beam of packets to get through our atmosphere and perhaps even go faster then light. Imagine how much better your DRILL would function if it were located within the extreme vacuum of our Selene/moon L1.

Mmm, Hagar the Chorrible. Back with yet another chore? Are those motors and transformers running and humming as effectively and efficiently as you'd like? P*O*W ! There went another of your transformers! Thank heavens for your efficient technicians! My last statement above is only as fallacious as your gruff persona, friend. I hereby humbly forward that your last statement is admirably (though thoughtlessly) arrogant.
-- **** Darla of sci.electromagnetics Be well and come, be welcome. You are the fifth star!
Can migratory birds actually see the Earth's magnetic filed lines of force? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No.
Are we headed for a collapse or reversal of that magnetic field? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No.
Magnetism seems to be a secondary effect of the electrical force, though maybe they are coequal. Finding a magnetic monopole would help establish that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monopoles existed shortly after the big bang.
But the big question: Is gravity the tertiary effect of the electrical force? Or the secondary effect of electromagnetism? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
